In the field of conflicting views during reconstruction of a historical church, under consideration of the present requirements for the protection of persons and buildings, GEZE has been able to offer a tailor-made RWA (smoke and heat extractor) system. GEZE supplies thereby a central element for fire prevention.
The City of Dresden’s council in 1722 gave the architect and city master carpenter George Bähr the assignment of building a church in a prominent position. Bähr designed the monumental, religious, Evangelical-Lutheran building exactly in high baroque style. Since its completion in 1743 the distinctive dome of the largest sandstone building worldwide has highlighted the skyline of Dresden. This changed with the terrible bombing in February 1945. Up until the reunification of Germany the ruin served as a memorial against war. In 1989 the appeal for funds, to which people and organisations from all over the world reacted and to date have donated about 100 million euro, started. The construction began in 1994 and was finalized on 30 October 2005 with a formal ceremony, the consecration.
Of the historical renovation of the Church of Our Lady, apart from the light coloured sandstone and the impressive dome, particular attention is drawn to the high windows, which are sometimes in places difficult to access. Here is where the technical challenge for the installation of a modern smoke and heat extractor lies. Smoke and heat extractors are always composed of at least three components: an opening system, in this case for windows, an emergency power supply control centre and fire alarm buttons.
In order to reconstruct the original appearance as near as possible, particular technical adaptations must be made. The smoke and heat extractors usually run off 24 volt supply. Drives for the high windows can only be supplied with power via very long cables. The requirement was for cables of small diameter, so that only minimal channels needed to be ground in the interior walls. This required a special solution. With approval from the Technical Supervisory Board the planning company decided on a proven GEZE smoke and heat extractor which operates on 230 V.
The windows in the upper area were equipped with GEZE E 206 drives. By reason of the size and the weight of the bottom-hung and top-hung casements, two drives each were installed. The mechanism used to provide driving power for the window casements is specially designed by FeSa-Fenstertechnik, Kevelaer, who put great value on a design which suited the building. A decisive safety aspect is that all smoke and heat extractors must function independently of the main power supply. In the case of 24 V systems this is assured by the chargeable battery integrated in the smoke and heat extractor emergency power central control. Since a 230 V version was incorporated, GEZE emergency power central controls E 260 N 2/1 were installed in special versions. The complete smoke and heat extractor system is connected to the substitute power supply of the building, thus assuring independence from the normal power supply.
