Slimdrive for Warrington Buses

You wait for ages, and then two arrive at once! Not only has the UK's leading supplier of door and window control systems, GEZE UK, installed the doors for Liverpool’s Paradise St Bus Interchange, but it has also been involved with the brand new bus interchange in Warrington.

GEZE UK was chosen by architects Jefferson Sheard to specify safe, practical, yet stylish entrances for passengers to exit the interchange and board the buses. An adjacent developer-funded retail scheme meant that careful design consideration was required. Jefferson Sheard used the latest best practice design principals to maximise natural light, passive ventilation, and cooling systems, so required doors which could fit seamlessly into this all-glass design, while ensuring the health and safety of passengers and access for all.

Contractors Kier North West engaged GEZE UK to install 18 Slimdrive SL operators with induction loops for the bus bays and four extra main entrance doors, which were bolted to the glass façade, constructed by CAP Aluminium. The SL was chosen because of its flexibility, which allows it to be bolted to glass without any frames, while fulfilling the Disability Discrimination Act requirements and ensuring compliance.

Safety was a key factor, so the SL operators were connected to induction loops, located in the bus bays. The induction loop identifies the presence of a bus and automatically unlocks the doors, allowing access to the bus. When a bus is not present, the doors remain closed, providing an extra safety feature to prevent members of the public creating hazards by walking in the bays, where buses are regularly in motion.

Andrew Young, Project Manager for Kier North West said: “The design is a million miles from traditional bus stations layouts and the architects had called on the experts at GEZE UK to specify automatic doors which could be fitted to glass and take up the minimum space.

“We chose GEZE UK to install the Slimdrive SL’s, which enabled us to stay in line with the architect’s design. The doors were installed quickly, efficiently and the team was highly professional. The reaction from the public has been superb and we are delighted with the result.”

GEZE’s UK specification manager, Paul Wyatt, said: “This project has a massive impact on the Warrington city centre and has been very warmly received by the public. It is another example of how the GEZE Slimdrive SL combines aesthetics with functionality. The expertise within the GEZE team means that we lead the way when it comes to working with glass and can combine safety, practicality and design with ease.”.”
